The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) has become the first institute in Sri Lanka to offer degree programs, accredited by the British Computer Society.
Right now, the IIT offers 4 such degree programs. These degrees will be in collaboration with the University of Westminister.
- BSc/BEng (Hons) in Software Engineering
- BSc (Hons) in Computer Science
- BSc (Hons) in Business Information Systems
- MSc Advanced Software Engineering
Graduates who complete any of the above degrees will meet the criteria for the Chartered IT Professional (CITP) registration. Of course, they would still be required to meet the required professional experience. But the degree programs would allow for a faster route to gain the CITP status, along with the eligibility for membership of BCS.
Additionally, graduates who complete the Computer Science and Software Engineering degrees will have the opportunity of obtaining the Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (CEng/ IEng).
Moving forward with BCS
The British Computer Society is the Chartered Institute for IT. The organization aims to promote wider social and economic progress via the advancement of information technology science and practice. BCS acts as the global body for IT qualifications and certifications, with over 70,000 members from all over the world.
Commenting on the accreditation, Naomi Krishnarajah, Dean of IIT had this to say, “We are privileged to have our degree programmes recognized by the British Computer Society. This clearly underscores the high quality of the IT degree programmes that we provide at IIT. The professional values and benchmark standards BCS set make our graduates stand out from the crowd and boost their marketability in an increasingly competitive business environment.”
IIT was awarded accreditation following an extensive evaluation process that took several months. BCS essentially looks at all aspects of a higher education institute in detail. This includes faculty, resources, teaching material, and coursework. The organization also conducts independent interviews with lecturers and students. This is done during their final visit prior to giving the accredited status.
Established in 1990, IIT has produced more than 3,000 graduates employed in over 250 multinational and local blue-chip companies. The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs from universities such as the University of Westminster, Robert Gordon University, and Canterbury Christ Church University.
