IIT adds Master’s in Cyber Security & Forensics to its degree programs

IIT Cyber Security and Forensics MSc

As a step to mounting their contemporary eminence, IIT has launched the institute’s first Cyber Security and Forensics Master’s program, awarded from the University of Westminster, UK. The course has been designed with a high degree of relevance to the industry’s needs. By nature the course is practitioner oriented and it provides highly marketable Computer Security and Digital Forensics skills.

Cyber Security or IT security, is the protection of information systems from theft or damage to the hardware, the software, and to the information on them, as well as from disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. Digital forensics is identifying, preserving, recovering, analyzing and presenting facts about digital evidence found on computers or digital storage media devices in relation to computer crime.IIT MSc in Cyber Security and Forensics

Commenting on the newest addition to the institute’s portfolio, Naomi Krishnarajah – Dean of IIT stated, “ While the world is becoming increasingly inter-connected, there is not enough attention paid to the security aspects and therefore computer systems and the huge volumes of data on them are vulnerable to attacks by malicious parties. Therefore, the need for improved computer security has never been greater and will only continue to increase into the future. We are introducing this Master’s program to increase the number of skilled professionals in the country to cope with this fast-changing field of IT”.

What can a student following the 2 year part time course gain on the overall?

  • Will gain insights into the nature of the security threats faced by today’s computer systems

  • Will be notified on The type of information that is stored on digital devices and how digital evidences can be traced and extracted from them

  • Offers students the chance to learn about a variety of tools available today which include forensic tools

  • Analysis of professional and ethical issues relating to computer security and forensics

  • Development of related professional competencies, such as report writing and presenting evidence in a court of law

Modules

The program consists of three main types of modules namely core modules, digital forensics pathway and cyber security pathway. The course is structured where it is mandatory for all students to cover five core modules. After completion of the core modules, they can choose a specialization either in Cyber Security or Digital Forensics.  In addition, all students will take a Research Methods module and complete a project module.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for the degree are as follows,

  • The minimum expected qualification is generally a Second upper degree in a computing-related field from a recognized university by IIT.

  • If the first degree does not have a strong computing element, then years of work experience together with other professional and academic qualifications will be considered.

  • Applicants are expected to face an interview.

The first intake for this program commenced in September 2018. All IIT courses are offered by friendly, highly-experienced staff, and benefit from the diverse specialist knowledge and skills within the institute. Teaching methodology at IIT includes lab-based sessions, student-led tutorials and lectures by internal staff and guest lectures from experts in the industry while assessments will be carried out primarily through practical or research-based course work.
