The extent of which the curriculum has destroyed the creativity of our students is paramount at the graduate level. Each year from universities around the country, a large base of graduates flood in looking out for jobs. Yet a majority of jobs go unfilled as employers cannot find workers with the relevant skills. The structure of the education system in Sri Lanka and the mismatch between the system outputs and the labour market needs, has led to significant unemployed university graduates. Graduates are left unemployed being unable to match the real-world qualifications.
In a background as such, DIMO Academy for Technical Skills (DATS) has opened doors for the nation’s youth to embrace themselves with a German-certified course in automobile mechatronics. This was done in collaboration with the German chamber of commerce. The course would give an opportunity for students to engage themselves in more of the applied work required by the job market, rather than the theoretical aspect that many degree programmes in the country focus on at present.
DIMO academy for technical skills
Diesel and motor engineering PL. or best known as DIMO was founded back in 1990. It’s one of the leading automobile companies in the country at present. DATS is a modern training centre located in Weliweriya and Jaffna. It offers training programmes in partnership with Daimler AG of Germany. Daimler AG of Germany has provided their continued technical expertise, guidance and equipment during the 28-year long journey of DATS, centred exclusively on the trustworthy service provided to the nation.
DATS is equipped with modern facilities that provide a comfortable, spacious learning environment for all students. The facilities include 3 fully-equipped lecture rooms, a modern electronic lab, a large workshop for vehicle repairs, a large workshop for basic metal work training, special tools to repair Mercedes-Benz cars, high-quality basic hand tool sets, specific electronic diagnostic equipment for Mercedes models and common electronic diagnostic equipment for other brands such as TATA. DATS is registered with the tertiary & vocational education commission. The DATS training syllabus is accredited to receive NVQ level IV certificate.
What is automobile mechatronics?
Automobile mechatronics combines the mechanical, electrical, electronic and information technology aspects of modern motor vehicles into a single discipline. Additionally, you will learn certain soft areas such as HR and Finance. For the first time in Sri Lanka, a three year course certified by the German chamber of commerce is offered at this magnitude incorporated with a German dual vocational training. What’s so special about the dual vocational training? It addresses the issue which many local degrees have been unable to provide with. It moulds the students to the job market by not only providing the theory but also by keeping the student’s education in demand with the industry by combining refined practical skills into it.
Who can apply for the certificate programme?
DIMO academy for technical skills is currently calling for applications from school leavers for its world-class diploma in automobile mechatronics particularly, DATS is open to both male and female candidates interested in pursuing a career in automobile technology.
- Passed G.C.E O/L examinations with B passes for mathematics, science and English or
- Passed G.C.E A/L examinations with two passes in mathematics, bioscience or technology stream.
- Below the age of 24 years on the closing date of the application
The course will be conducted under the guidance of a specialised team certified by the German chamber of commerce. It will be held at the company’s state-of-the-art DATS. The specialised team includes experienced automobile instructors with a wide range of professional backgrounds (engineers, technicians, service advisors etc.), trained and certified according to German trainer qualifications. On-the-job training will be at DIMO’s state-of-the-art Mercedes Benz, Tata, borsch and construction machinery workshops.
Fees and funding
The course could be acquired at the expense of approximately LKR 2 million for the entire 3-year full-time course. Payment in instalments as well as loan facilities with several banks are offered and can be arranged at your request. During the training, trainees will receive meals, uniforms and footwear at the cost of dimo. Company medical facilities and insurance coverage too are provided free of charge as well.
For those individuals willing to pursue higher education, the German qualification framework allows certificate holders to progress to the level of “meister” (i.e. Master craftsman), a bachelor’s degree in engineering at a university. You can even become a certified engineer through a higher vocational school in Germany.
Expressing his views, Ranjith Pandithage – chairman & managing director of DIMO stated, “Through DIMOS’s pioneering automobile mechatronics course, we are giving students the opportunity to acquire skills and competencies that are highly sought after. This unique opportunity will be open to a selected few per year and DIMO is in search of young men and women who are passionate about automobile technology and driven to meet the challenges of this demanding qualification program.”
