If you’re an avid reader and have been following social media closely, then you already know what Big Bad Wolf is all about. But in case you didn’t, Big Bad Wolf (BBW) is an international book sale popular in the South Asian region, specifically in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. This big book sale recently made its way to the Sri Lankan shores.
How it all began
Back in 2009, Dataran Hamodal in Selangor, Malaysia witnessed the very first Big Bad Wolf Book Sale. The Following its success BBW moved on to countries like Thailand and Indonesia. So what really happens at the Big Bad Wolf? Basically, all the excess stock from large distributors will be sold here. What this simply means is that you get to buy your favourite book at a dirt cheap price. How cheap? Try a $30 book for Rs.790.
Conceptualized by Andrew Yap, Sri Lanka is essentially the 4th country to host this book sale.
Ayubowan to the Big Bad Wolf
Kicking things off on the 5th of October, the BBW book sale is currently underway in full swing at the SLECC. After all, its not everyday you get to see SLECC packed with nothing but books. If you’ve already visited the sale once, chances are you might be thinking of heading there again. If you’re like me, you would have already been there 3 times by now.
But its not just about the plethora of books. The sale will be running 24/7 at the SLECC. This means you can make a visit at 5.00 in the evening or even 3.00 in the morning. So its not surprising that the premises often seem to have a crowd drawn in.
Okay, so what can I buy at BBW?
Whether you’re a fiction fan looking for that David Baldacci book or a comic book enthusiast hunting to complete a collection, there’s something on offer for pretty much everyone. Each category has its own variety of selections to chose from. Fiction, Literature, Young Adult, Business & Economics, Self Help, Biography, History are only some of the categories at BBW.
Are they really cheap?
Personally, I was a bit skeptical at first. But it was a complete different story once I did visit BBW. Most of my own purchases were hard cover books in the $25 – $35 price range. But I ended up paying only Rs. 790 or less. So yes, they are pretty cheap. And in case you were wondering, yes they accept card as well as cash payments.
Still, should I make it to the Big Bad Wolf?
One of the things that I found refreshing is the experience for an avid reader. The usual book fairs we’re used to mostly consist of massive sweaty crowds that prevent you from actually checking out the books in peace. At Big Bad Wolf however, you can manage quite easily even with a packed audience.
Getting back to the books itself, as stated earlier pretty much every genre of book is up for grabs. But if you’re someone looking for academic books, then I’m afraid you’re out of luck. Also, if you’re a DC comic book fan, chances are you’ll be disappointed as well.
So, obviously not every single book will be available here. But that shouldn’t discourage you to visit BBW by any means. Again, plenty of books to chose from.
Side note: For those of you interested, there’s a BBW membership on offer if you’re headed towards the book sale. We ourselves signed up owing to the promise of additional discounts for certain purchases. But these additional discounts were only available for very limited number of books. You might as well avoid this (unless you enjoy getting regular newsletters).
